Poikaset lähtivät - The birds have left the nest

Kaikki poikaset jättivät pesän 20 minuutin sisällä eilen aamupäivällä. Kaksi lähti samaan aikaan mutta viimeinen jäi hetkeksi. Emo kävi ruokkimassa sitä kerran ja sen jälkeen sekin lähti.



Yesterday morning the all the chicks left the nest within 20 minutes. Two of them went at the same time, and one stayed for a while. One of the parents came in and fed it once, and shortly after that then it was gone too.

Enää 3 poikasta jäljellä - only 3 little birds left

Viime viikonlopun uutisissa kerrottiin että jopa puolet joidenkin lintujen pesistä on tuhoutunut kylmän sään takia - uutisjutussa näytettiin tiaisen pesää johon poikaset olivat paleltuneet.

Tämä pesä ei vielä ole hävinnyt kokonaan, mutta poikasten määrä on pesinnän loppua kohden pudonnut alkuperäisestä seitsemästä kolmeen. Syynä lienee se että viileänä pysynyt sää on vähentänyt hyönteisten määrää. Taas yksi poikanen jäi muista kasvussa jälkeen ja se on nyt kuolleena pesän pohjalla. Varmaankin se pian poistetaan pesästä.

The TV news last weekend told that for some birds more than half of the nests have been destroyed because of the cold weather. The news story went on by showing a tit's nest where the young had died of cold.

In this nest the result is not quite that bad, but the number of surviving chicks is now down to 3 from the original 7. Again, one of them stopped growing with the others, and it is now lying dead in the nest. It's not probably long before the parents toss it out. The reason for the deaths is probably the lack of insects due to the relatively cold weather in the past couple of weeks.

Niinhän siinä kävi että poikasista pienin hävisi pesästä. Jälleenkään sen pois vienti ei tarttunut kameraan.
Viisi jäljelle jäänyttä poikasta alkaa olemaan valmiita lähtemään pesästä. Lähtö tapahtunee alkuviikon aikana.



The chick growing slower than the others did disappear from the nest. Again, the motion activated camera failed to catch the moment when the poor bird was tossed out of the nest.
The remaining five, however are getting ready to leave the nest. That will probably happen during the first half of next week.

Yksi poikasista jää kasvussa jälkeen - One of the chicks is not growing like the others

Yksi poikasista näyttää jäävän kasvussa jälkeen toisista. Saapa nähdä miten sen käy. Pesästä lähtö on odotettavissa noin viikon kuluttua ja siihen mennessä sen pitäisi saada muut kiinni. Alla olevassa kuvassa tuo pienin poikanen on oikealla.



One of the chicks is growing a lot slower than the others. Last year one like that died, so we shall see what happens to this little tweeter. The birds are expected to leave the nest in about a week from now, so in a weeks time this one should become as big as its sisters and brothers. In the above picture, the runt is on the right.

6 poikasta jäljellä - 6 chicks left

Näyttää siltä että yksi poikasista on kadonnut jonnekin. Tallenetuista kuvista ei vain löydy miten se on hävinnyt. Löytymista hankaloittaa se että seitsemän pienen poikasen erottaminen kuvista on kohtuullisen vaikeaa.



It seems like one of the chicks has disappeared. The stored pictures don't reveal how that happened. It is quite difficult to tell if a stored picture has 7 or 6 small birds when they spend most of their time in a small pile.

Poikaset kuoriutuneet - The baby birds are born

Kaikki poikaset kuoriutuivat eilen. Ohessa nopeutettu filmi aiheesta.
Koiraslinnun ruokkimisvietti näytti heräävän heti kuoriutumisen jälkeen ja se käy pesässä vähän väliä.



The baby birds were born yesterday. This is a time-lapse recording of the first 5 being born. Also the father started feeding the babies almost immediately when they were born.

Munat peitellään ennnen ulos lähtöä - Covering the eggs before going out

Hautominen pöntössä jatkuu. Alkuviikosta kamera oli tallentanut alla videoksi muunnetun kuvasarjan jossa tintti peittää munat ennen aamuista ruoanhakumatkaa.



In the beginning of this week, the camera had captured the above video in which the bird covers the eggs before leaving the nest - apparently for a food gathering trip.

7 munaa - 7 eggs

Eilen pöntössä oli 7 munaa. Tähän niiden tulo varmaan loppuukin.



Yesterday there were 7 eggs in the nest. This is probably all there will be.

5 munaa - 5 eggs

Munat ovat peitettynä useimmiten linnun poistuessa pöntöstä, joten niitä ei ole päässyt laskemaan.
Tänä aamuna tallentuneista muutamasta kuvasta pääsi kuitenkin laskemaan viisi munaa.



The eggs have been covered almost always when the bird has left the box. This morning a few pictures were recorded with 5 eggs visible in them.

Muninta alkanut - Laying eggs has started

Pönttöön ilmestyivät ensimmäiset kaksi munaa eilen ja tänään. Viimevuotisista linnuista poiketen, emo näyttää hautovan suurimman osan päivää jo tässä vaiheessa.



The first two eggs appeared in the box yesterday and today. Different from the birds last year, the mom seems to stay in the nest for most of the day already now.

Pesä valmis, höyhenpallovaihe alkoi - Nest ready, the featherball phase began.

Pesä pöntössä on nyt kokonaan valmis. Sen valmistumisen huomaa siitä että pintakerrokseksi on tuotu sammalen lisäksi muuta, pehmeämpää materiaalia.

Tiainen näyttää aloittaneeen vaiheen jossa se viettää pöntössä pitempiä aikoja ja pörhistää itsensä pallon muotoiseksi. Viime vuonna höyhenpallo oli havaittavissa vasta ensimmäisen munan tulon jälkeen. Vielä en kuitenkaan pöntöstä munia löydä.



The is now completely ready. The last thing the tits do is to bring in other materials than moss to make the softest top layer.

Also (at least one of the birds) seems to have started to spend more time in the nest, forming a feather ball. Last year the 'feather ball phase' began after the first egg had been laid, but I have not been able to find an egg in the nest yet.

Pesä alkaa olla valmis - The nest is getting ready

Sammalta on viime päivinä tullut pönttöön sen verran ettei pohjaa enää näy. Pesän kuppimainen muoto on sen sijaan selkeästi havaittavissa.



The birds have carried moss into the box so much that the bottom of the box cannot be seen any more. The cup-like structure of the nest is pretty well visible, though.

Rakennus jatkuu - Building continues

Tiaiset ovat jatkaneet pesän rakentamista hitaasti mutta varmasti. Käyntejä pöntössä on joka päivä, ja sammalta ilmestyy vähä vähältä lisää.



The birds have continued building the nest slowly. They visit the box several times every day, and the amount of moss in the box grows slowly but steadily.

Muutama päivä sitten kun takapihan lumet sulivat pois, tiaiset toivat pönttöön joitain sammalia.
Kummallista kyllä sammalien määrä ei ole sen jälkeen juurikaan lisääntynyt, vaan linnut näyttävät lähinnä keskittyvän järjestelemään niitä uudelleen aina pöntössä käydessään.



Some days ago when the snow in the backyard melted away, the birds brought in some pieces of moss into the box. It seemed like they were starting building the nest, but to my surprise, they stopped bringing in more moss. Instead they just seem to take their time moving the existing stuff around in the box whenever they are visiting.

Talo täynnä - A full house

Vierailut pöntössä ovat jatkuneet joka päivä. Tänään ensimmäisen kerran pönttöön sattui muutamaksi sekunniksi kaksi tiaista samaan aikaan. Mahtavatkohan ne olla pariskunta vai voisikohan siellä käydä esim kaksi kilpailevaa koirasta?




The bird(s) have continued visiting the box every day. Today for the first time, there were two of them in the box at the same time - for a few seconds only. I wonder if they are a couple or if for an example two competing males could end up in the box at the same time...

Valmistautuminen uuteen pesintäkauteen - Getting ready for a new season

Viime viikonlopppuna huolsin kamerapöntön uutta kesää varten.
Avasin sen ja totesin ettei viime vuosi jättänyt vaurioita sen sisuskaluihin.
Viime vuonna osa kameran infrapunaledeistä oli peitettynä, koska ne valaisivat aivan liian kirkkaasti pienessä tilassa. Tänä vuonna
päätin sen sijaan rajoittaa kirkkautta pienentämällä kameran aukkoa - saadakseni samalla paremman syvyysterävyyden. Aukon pienennys onnistui alumiinifoliotarralla johon tehtiin sopiva reikä reijittimellä.

Pöntön sisuskalut ja kameran aukon pienennys näkyvät alla olevissa kuvissa. Puutyön laatu ei ole edes ihan IKEAn tasoa.

Last weekend I did some bird-box maintenance to get ready for a new nesting season. I opened the camera box and noted that there was no apparent damage from last year. Half of the IR LEDs used to be covered to limit the amount of light in the box to a level that was ok for the camera. For this year, I decided to force a smaller lens aperature instead. This was handily done using an aluminum foil sticker to which I punched a small hole.

The pictures below show the internals of the camera box. Unfortunately the woodwork quality does not even get up to the IKEA level.





Kun pönttö oli puussa ei kestänyt kuin parikymmentä minuuttia kun ensimmäinen talitiainen jo meni sisälle tarkastamaan sitä. Muutaman minuutin mittaiset visiitit ovat sen jälkeen jatkuneet pari-kolme kertaa päivässä. Talitiaisen lisäksi pöntössä on välillä käynyt myös sinitiainen.

With the box installed into the large pine in our backyard, it only took about twenty minutes for the first tit to visit an inspect it. The visits have then contiuned every day of the week. The visits seem to last just a few minutes at a time. In addition to the great tit, also an ocassional blue tit has checked the box out.
