6 munaa ja uusi suojapelti - 6 eggs and a new tin plate around the entrance hole

Nyt pöntössä on jo 6 munaa, ja emot hautovat niitä osan aikaa.
Laitoin uuden, pari milliä pienemmän suojapellin suuaukon ympärille. Toivottavasti se pitää pesärosvot poissa.

So, now there are 6 eggs in the nest and the parents are incubating part time.
I put a slightly smaller new tin cover around the entrance hole. Hopefully it is enough to keep the unwanted visitors away.

Kirjosieppo aloitti muninnan - A pied flycatcher started laying eggs

Tultuani eilen parin viikon reissusta huomasin että kirjosieppopariskunta oli koristellut pöntön pesää omakseen ja alkanut muninnan. Pitääkin tänään katsoa voiko rosvojen pääsyä pönttöön jotenkin vaikeuttaa.








After I returned from a 2 week business trip, I noticed yesterday that a pied flycatcher couple had started decorating the nest to make it their own and laying egss. I will try today to figure out some ways to make it more difficult for the various robbers to enter the box.

Pesintä epäonnistui - Nesting failed

No, pieleenhän se pesintä meni. Käenpiian poistuttua tintti on käynyt pöntössä tasan kaksi kertaa.
Hämmentävää sinänsä - minnekähän se mahtaa olla muninut loput munansa? Yllättävän vähästä se otti kerralla opikseen.

Tehdessäni inventaariota pöntössä käynneistä törmäsin pariin muuhun kävijään: kirjosieppoon ja kärppään. Kärppä on sinänsä yllättävä vieras, että pönttö on männyssä 3,5m korkeudella ja aukko on ohjeiden mukaan porattu ja pellitetty.

The nesting was interrupted after the egg had been eaten. The tit has visited only the nest two times after that. I wonder where it has laid the rest of its eggs.

When I was checking the visits into the bird box in the past few days, I noticed two surprising visitors: a pied flycatcher and a stoat. The stoat is a surprising visitor since the box is up in the tree 3.5m from the ground and the access hole is sized according to recommendations.

No Jopas - kun katsoin viikonlopun tallennuksia pidemmälle, pöntössä kävi isompi lintu joka näytti syövän munan pois. Puutteellisilla tunnistustaidoilla luulen että lintu on käenpiika. Tämän jälkeen aktiviteetti pöntössä on ollut vähäistä. Saapa nähdä menikö pesintä tästä pieleen.

When reviewing the weekends recordings further, I noticed that there was a strange visitor that ate the egg just after the egg was laid.  I am suspecting that it was a Eurasian Wryneck, but I am not sure. The activity in the box has been low after that, so I am wondering if the nest has been abandoned.

Kamera toimii taas - Camera in action again

Parin kesän hiljaiselon jälkeen kamera on taas puussa ja toiminnassa.
2011 kamera toimi mutta energiaa blogin pitamiseen ei ollut.
2012 kamera hajosi juuri pesinnän alkamisen jälkeen.

Nyt pöntössä on D-linkin DCS-932L nettikamera (mainos mainos). Kamerasta saa ulos paitsi liikkeentunnistuksella tallennettuja kuvia, myös videota äänen kera. En vielä ole saanut kuitenkaan saanut viritettyä tapaa saada tuota videota näkyville tänne blogiin asti.

Kuvat tallentuvat (ja 10s välein päivittyvä "live"-kuva on katsottavissa) vanhasta NLSU-2 purkista jossa liux ja tilaa 300GB.

Pöntön on tällä kertaa ominut talitianen ja pesän rakennus on jo aika pitkällä. Hassua kyllä, tiaisia ei ole näkynyt kahta.

After a couple of quite summers, the camera is up in the backyard pine again. I have upgraded to a D-link DCS932L wifi camera.  The new camera has motion activation, as well as support for video with sound. I just havent figured out how to post the video into this blog yet.
